Warm welcome at Shine ZC

Shine ZC Midlands' first zero-carbon build

Industry professionals, including developers, architects, engineers and Local Authority Planners, have been visiting the Shine ZC site in Derby this week as the project nears compeltion.

Scaffolding was taken down from three of the nine dwellings last week, giving a good indication of what the Midlands' first zero-carbon urban development will look like.

Two open days, on 29th and 30th June, organised by Sustainable Construction I-net, have given industry representatives a chance to look round the site and gain valuable insight into how the project has take shape.  Radio Derby popped down on Thursday to interview Simon and architects's magazines have shown interest in this Level 6 (zero carbon) project.

Presentations were made by Paul Rowley of Loughborough University, Chris Perkins and Vince Smedley from EMRE (East Midlands Renewable Energy), Mark Cartwright of Logix ICF and John Hough of Aggregate Industries.  Visitors to the site heard about the design, procurement and post-completion research process of Shine ZC, which is the first true zero-carbon build in the UK.

Features of the project include development of the first bespoke thermal store basement, consisting or rubble from the building that stood on the site before; ICF (insulated concrete framework) brickwork; and an integrated building management system.  This system will take readings from 500 sensors located throughout the building and will, over a 2 year period, provide data on carbon dioxide, humidity and temperature levels, water and general energy usage.

We are delighted to see the Woods Land development taking shape and the feedback so far has been extremely positive.

Shine ZC is due for completion in August 2011.
