11-12 Friar Gate, Derby

Derby
Cost / Stage:

Graze Restaurant, 11-12 Friar Gate

11, 11a, and 12 Friar Gate are located within the pre-eminent conservation area in Derby. When we first looked at the series of buildings they were three separate derelict neighbouring buildings in a serious state of dilapidation. Number 12 is Grade II* listed, with 11 and 11a being locally listed. Graze took the view that this location was perfect for their first restaurant, which would eventually accommodate 120 covers.
The design minimised the works to the built fabric of the grade II* building, with minimal openings introduced which link the 3 buildings together. A new build element was also introduced creating additional seating areas and bringing an open floor plan enabling the kitchen to be viewed from the majority of the restaurant floor.
Graze is now one of the most popular restaurants in Derby city centre, with a second restaurant in Nottingham planned for 2009.
