This 1930s semi-detached property in Derbys Strutts Park conservation area was extended to create more space for a young family. The existing garage was removed, clearing a large area to the side of the property. The brief was to rationalise the ground floor layout, creating a flexible open plan kitchen and day room area which would allow the children to play together while their parents keep on eye on them. Additional bedroom space was also required to the first floor with en-suite.
The design has two main parameters running through it, ensure the front of the property is in keeping with the conservation area requirement, and create an open, light, visually stimulating space. The gull-wing roof form increases the privacy of the internal space by angling the rooflights away from the overlooking neighbouring property and also creates a dramatic roof-scape inside and out. The roof overhang the glass doors by 1m allowing the doors to be open when its raining if required.
The owners are keen gardeners and enjoy the outdoors. The design encourages the link between the external and internal space, with the introduction of the large concertina doors allows the rear of the house to be completely open to the garden.
